Gouthwaite Wildlife Centre drop-in events

Come and see plans and drawings for a proposed new public bird hide and wildlife centre at Gouthwaite Reservoir.

A view down the length of Gouthwaite reservoir with a tree covered hillside and fields to the left, reflecting in the water

The proposed centre will allow people to watch and find out about Nidderdale’s special birdlife; be open to the public year-round; and give fantastic views across the reservoir

The idea of having a wildlife centre is great and to be welcomed. That said, I do have concerns which are as follows:

My main concern is for the wildlife itself and I believe that putting in gable windows at each end of the building and in the large room (water side) will have the affect of scaring the wildlife away from the building. I am basing this on my experience of using other facilities that have large windows where the movement of the wildlife watchers is unwelcome.

Another concern is that the bird hide appears to be secondary to the large room so what is the main purpose of the building, to watch wildlife or to hold meetings?

Will the large room be soundproofed?

I have been given three different costs for this project £80k, £100k and £120k all of which seem excessive. Is the aim to get a design award or build something that is practical and blends in with the surroundings? The building needs to be as unobtrusive as possible.
